This $300 Motorola features a big screen and battery – but its durability is the crown jewel

Motorola starts 2025 by revealing two mid-range smartphones: the Moto G and its big brother, the Moto G Power. The company says these devices are “entertainment powerhouses”, delivering both “exceptional photography [plus] immersive” media at a low price.

The entertainment-rich capability starts with the display. Each phone has a bright 1,000-nit screen running at a 120Hz refresh rate. This screen ensures smooth “streaming, gaming, [and web page] scrolling”. Supporting the display is a robust speaker system backed up by Dolby Atmos and Bass Boost tech that can output high-resolution audio. 

Other shared features include a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset delivering solid performance and a rear camera system led by a 50MP camera. There is a small difference in size between the two devices. The Moto G measures 6.7 inches, while the Power model is a slightly larger 6.8 inches. 

The Moto G Power also has a few features that make it a more powerful option. Take charging capabilities. Both Motorola devices run on a 5,000mAh battery that can last a little over 24 hours on a single charge, while 30W TurboPower enables speedy recharge times. However, the Power model stands out by supporting 15W wireless charging.

The most significant difference is in the device’s camera systems. Although both devices have a 50MP lens, the Moto G Power is better at taking clearer pictures thanks to optical image stabilization. The device also has an 8MP ultrawide camera with a combination of auto-focus and Macro Vision to help maintain clarity in photographs. 

Design-wise, they look the same. However, the Moto G Power has a tougher body. The device is rated for both IP68 and IP69. This rating means three things: its internal hardware is completely sealed off from dust, it can handle blasts from high-pressure water jets, and it can survive submersion up to a meter underwater. To top everything off, the screen is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass, giving it resistance to scratches.

Motorola’s Moto G, on the other hand, isn’t as tough or capable. It lacks wireless charging, houses a 2MP Macro Vision lens, has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 instead of Gorilla Glass 5, and can only repel water. The smartphone cannot survive submersion. Yet the device is still a solid option for people who want a new phone without the premium cost.

The Moto G launches unlocked on January 30 across multiple retailers, such as Amazon, for $200. One week later, on February 6, the Moto G Power will roll out for $300.
